Individual Heavy VPN Client

Older computers running 32-bit operating systems require a legacy software program called the "heavy client" to connect to the campus VPN. We recommend downloading the latest client version from this site. The VPN client is approximately 3 MB in size, and is available at no cost for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Solaris operating systems.

Select the client for your operating system from the following grid:

Some users have reported problems attempting to download the VPN client and uofu.pcf files from Safari and Firefox browsers. Until this problem is resolved, we recommend using IE, Chrome, or Chromium browser when downloading the client software.

UIT no longer supports VPN clients for Windows 2000 and earlier or Mac OS 9 and earlier. However, the clients are still available; contact the Campus Help Desk at (801) 581-4000, option 1.

Testing the VPN Connection

After installing the VPN client, you can test if the software is working.

  1. Bookmark this page in a browser.
  2. Connect to the Internet via your ISP.
  3. Run the VPN client software and login using your uNID and network password
  4. Click this link to Test your VPN connection

Using a VPN connection with UGuest

The UGuest wireless network is bandwidth-limited. Wireless users who cannot use the UConnect network and wish to have full bandwidth access on UGuest can connect through a VPN solution:

  1. Login to UGuest
  2. Browse to the VPN client of your choice (WebVPN, AnyConnect, or the Heavy Client) and login using your uNID and network password.
  3. Navigate to the resources you need.
