CHPC staff remember friend, co-worker Steve Smith
Steve R. Smith | Jan. 12, 1955-Feb. 25, 2014
Steve Smith was hired at the Center for High Performance Computing in 2003 as a desktop Windows system administrator after working at several non-profit businesses. His many contributions to CHPC include centralizing virus management with the McAfee EPO service, migrating our Windows environment from NT4 to Active Directory, and integrating CHPC’s login systems with campus to support single sign-on to CHPC systems.
Behind his sometimes gruff demeanor, Steve was a very compassionate person, and he consistently took users’ needs to heart. He spent countless extra hours on weeknights and weekends recovering data and cleaning machines from malware infections so that the users would not lose their hard-fought research data. He was a true friend with a wicked sense of humor and a loyal co-worker for all in CHPC.
Steve loved to trout fish. He also loved to camp, take his grandkids out on the boat, and play his guitar. He was an accomplished guitar player, singer, and songwriter.
Steve leaves behind his loving wife, Kelly, three daughters, and 10 grandchildren. He will be missed.
