Jake Johansen, CIO (interim)

Jake Johansen serves as the interim chief information officer (CIO) for the University of Utah main campus, Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN), and the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE).

As interim CIO, Johansen oversees information technology strategy and operations;  reviews and leverages emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) tools; and boosts cybersecurity efforts. He also leads UETN, which supports Utah’s school districts, state libraries, and government agencies via a statewide network of online resources.

For the past 23 years, Johansen has worked in a broad range of IT security-related jobs, most recently as university chief information security officer, reporting to former campus Chief Information Officer Steve Hess and University of Utah Health System Chief Digital Information Officer Donna Roach.

Prior to taking on the CISO role, Johansen worked as director for Enterprise Security in the U’s Information Security Office (ISO), for which he managed Information Assurance, Security Engineering, and Security Operations Center teams. His work entailed promoting, implementing, and supporting the university’s Cybersecurity Program; overseeing the process of gathering, analyzing, and assessing current and future information security threat landscapes; hiring, training, and managing staff; and actively participating in the IT governance process.

Johansen reports to Chief Operating Officer Jeff Labrum.

Johansen is a certified information systems security professional (CISSP) and certified healthcare information security leader (CHISL).
