University Information Technology Management
University Information Technology Management (UITM) is a unit within University Information Technology’s (UIT) Chief Technology Officer (CTO) organization that provides strategic leadership and oversight of IT services and embedded IT staff for University of Utah organizations. UITM supports the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and manages University Campus Computer Support (UCCS), which supports nine campus units.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership and oversight of IT services for LAS, including the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, including the College of Science, the College of Humanities, and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
- Coordination of staff, services, and technology practices across campus organizations
- Implementation of UIT standards and strategic initiatives within supported units
- Support for sustainable and scalable IT service delivery
Coordinated IT service model
UITM operates through a coordinated model in which IT staff remain embedded in their respective units while reporting through UIT. This structure enables:
- Alignment with UIT policies, procedures, and technology standards
- Consistent service delivery across units
- Shared access to tools, resources, and institutional expertise
- Continued proximity to faculty, staff, researchers, and students in each unit
This approach supports local responsiveness and university-wide consistency.
University Campus Computer Support
UCCS delivers reliable, unit-aligned IT services to University of Utah organizations that do not have dedicated technical staff. As part of UIT, UCCS extends centralized IT capabilities directly into campus units, ensuring consistent, secure, and responsive support across the broader university community.
Using an embedded service model, UCCS partners with departments to provide day-to-day technical support, life-cycle management of computing resources, and guidance on technology solutions that support teaching, research, and administrative operations. This approach allows units to focus on their core mission while maintaining alignment with university standards, IT security practices, and infrastructure.
UCCS offers two flexible service models designed to meet the varying needs of campus organizations:
- Customized support agreements
Annual service contracts provide scalable support at defined service levels, allowing organizations to select the coverage and responsiveness that best fits their operational needs and budget. - Embedded IT partnerships (memorandums of understanding)
For larger or more complex environments, UCCS provides dedicated, on-site or closely aligned IT staff who integrate directly with the unit. This model delivers proactive support, deeper institutional knowledge, and strategic alignment with both departmental and university-wide technology initiatives.
Through these models, UCCS delivers more than technical support — it provides a consistent, trusted IT presence that improves reliability, reduces risk, and connects campus units to the full capabilities of UIT.
