Dave discussed two major projects underway: Migrating staff and faculty accounts to Microsoft Exchange Online, and migrating all U Skype for Business accounts to Microsoft Teams. Topics included timeline, what is in/out of scope, known issues, and a Q&A.

James gave a brief self-introduction/bio, presented an organizational overview that highlighted the UMail and Voice Teams, 2018/2019 roadmap for major UC projects, and he led a short discussion on internal processes around Enhanced 911 (E911).

April 24, 2018: For campus web developers: transition to Google Custom Search Engine

Barb explained what web developers need to know as the U transitions to the Google Custom Search Engine (GCSE) for institutional web search services. Google Search Appliance (GSA), the university’s current institutional website search product, is being discontinued by Google. The U's contract with GSA ends in May 2018. After a months-long search for a suitable alternative, the U will transition to GCSE – Google’s no-cost search service, which is ad-free for non-profit institutions.

Jim introduced UCloud, the U's new hybrid cloud service. He described the UCloud service; what will be orderable via a self-service portal; changes customers will notice in the ordering process regarding network provisioning, storage, and pricing; UCloud automation capabilities; advantages of UCloud over public cloud products; and an update about UIT's traditional cloud services.

Dave gave a demonstration of Teams, and he and Caprice answered Teams questions. Microsoft Teams is a free chat-based Office 365 tool that enables enhanced collaboration for U faculty, staff, and students.

October 3, 2017: Google Search Appliance replacement

The University currently uses the Google Search Appliance (GSA) for enterprise website search. The GSA returns results when website visitors type search queries into the search box in the upper right corner of the University’s main utah.edu site and the vast majority of campus websites.

Google has, unfortunately, decided to discontinue this product without having a replacement solution in place. As a result, the University is embarking on a venture to find a new enterprise website search solution. Barb presented a brief history of web search solutions at the U, an overview of GSA including top features, and shared a survey link, http://bit.ly/GSA-survey, which will help her content and usability group in USS gather feedback.

Sarah gave an overview of free CEB resources available to the University of Utah community, explained how to find content and interact with CEB experts, and provided a quick glance at useful tools.

CEB, now part of Gartner, helps IT professionals and organizations with strategic planning and budgeting, engaging business partners, defining strategy and architecture, managing project portfolios, delivering services, managing risk, developing and managing talent, and establishing IT foundations.

InfoBlox is a network tool used at the University for DNS/DHCP/IPAM management.Tyler and Florian went over the basics of InfoBlox best practices and GUI navigation, including the differences between various DDI record types and when it's best to use each; UIT/ITS best practices for subnet IP layout; DDNS and how we use it to make life easier for admins; UIT/ITS best practices for DNS naming convention; InfoBlox GUI tabs and where to find what; and tips and tricks of InfoBlox operational use.

Scott and Chris talked about how the UIT Help Desk works, the range of services their staff provide to the campus community, and the best ways for students, faculty, staff, and IT professionals to get the support they need. Although the product manager function is a bit different across UIT groups, the endgame is the same: deliver services that are valuable, useable and feasible. The Office of the CTO and University Support Services, in particular, are maturing their product management services to better serve the campus community. In this presentation, Dave introduced the product management concept and, with the help of Caprice, discussed the product manager role in the CTO office, while Gary talked about the product manager role in USS.

June 13: How does IT governance work at the University of Utah?

IT governance was reformed and relaunched about a year ago to provide broader campus input into the University’s IT direction. Scott talked about the overall governance model, looked at some of the decisions that have come out of the committees, and looked ahead to upcoming topics. Plus, he showed participants  how to get more information about past discussions and how to offer input into future ones.

Dustin and Clayton discussed the challenges around the Internet of Things (IoT) in regards to the enterprise, focusing on devices – what they are, where they're being used, security risks, and best practices to secure them. They also talked about concerns around services to which these devices connect and outlined strategies for how to incorporate these types of devices into our enterprise.

This talk provided an overview and demonstration of the upcoming CIS portal upgrade and redesign. Presenter Mark Curtz detailed why CIS is getting a new look and feel, and walked attendees through the new system. Curtz explained how various homepages organize links and resources in a new iconized display paradigm, and how users will be able to customize existing pages.
