The University of Utah’s inaugural Organizational Change Community of Practice (CoP) meeting took place on April 28, 2025, at the Marriott Library.

“The university is experiencing a high period of transformational change. The CoP is intended for the many professionals working to drive those changes,” said Jeff Shuckra, associate director for UIT’s Strategic Planning and Process team, which facilitates the CoP on behalf of the university. “Our community is strongest when many individual professionals connect to the full network and resources of the U.”

David Ellison, senior director for Operational Excellence, said “the capabilities of this group are more in need than ever before.”

“This is a time we should really be coordinating a bit more across the university to be successful,” Ellison said.

The kickoff meeting served as an introductory session for 41 organizational change leaders across the U and included a service mapping exercise around the themes of leadership, strategic communication, and training.

In addition to supporting President Taylor Randall’s Strategy 2030 initiative, Laura Stevens,  Operations Program manager in Operational Excellence, said a broader, long-term goal of the CoP is to formally align with the Utah chapter of the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP), where she sits on the board. Stevens said ACMP-Utah possesses resources and network opportunities that could directly benefit the U’s org change professionals.

Organizational Change CoP meetings will be held quarterly. Anyone interested in sharing organizational change-related knowledge, expertise, and best practices; leveraging research; learning about ongoing change efforts at the U; and discussing topics of interest are invited to attend.

Future meetings and workshops will take place online via Microsoft Teams. Dates and times will be posted on the Process team’s event page and in the Organizational Change CoP’s Teams channel. The first change-related seminar, “Principles of Strategic Planning,” took place via Teams on May 12 (access the Strategic Plan PowerPoint template discussed). Other planned activities include highlighting ongoing org change projects and connections to ACMP-Utah events.
