Kudos & Congratulations

Congratulations to Josh Gross (ISO) and Amber Angell (CIS) for winning last month's prize drawing!

UIT staff recognized for their excellent work

On Saturday July 23rd starting around 9:00 p.m., the monitoring system showed intermittent failures for applications using CAS. After passing credentials through, some users would have gotten error screens. The monitoring team called the Service Desk tech line (agent Richard Brown was great to work with!), who reached out to the IRT lead and opened a ticket with the IAM team. Bryan Wooten was on the ticket quickly and addressed the issue. Shout-out to Kevin Cai, from the monitoring team, for his help isolating the problem. Turns out one of the CAS server’s CPUs had maxed out for an extended period of time. Bryan was able to fix the problem quickly and return stability to the authentication process by 11:00 p.m.

This is a great example of monitoring catching an issue and quickly working collaboratively to minimize any end user impact.

A BIG thank you to Corky Richardson for gathering all the hardware assets for Platform Services. This was a huge undertaking and very time consuming. We now have an accurate and up-to-date list of all our hardware along with all the pertinent information (e.g. asset numbers, serial numbers, location, maintenance information). This information is key for decisions around life cycle management, budget preparations, etc.

A BIG thank you to Rob Yeo for improving the campus backup environment which resulted in the ability to increase our backup frequency and retention. In addition, he has been one of our key players in our public cloud hosting efforts.

~ Kim Tanner, Platform Services

Thank you Kim Tanner (Platform Services) for filling in details on IT outage post-mortems going back several months. I'm always impressed by your responsiveness and attention to detail.

~ Jesse Drake, Strategic Communication

Kudos to Marv Hawkins for initiating our first USS prototyping process with Finance!

~ Ken Pink, Deputy CIO

Thanks to the cross-functional team that rapidly developed the Aug. 22 This Week @TheU article about best password practices. The article was delivered to all students, faculty and staff just in time for the start of the new school year. Corey Roach (ISO), Subhasish Mitra (IAM), Shellie Eide (USS), Scott Sherman (CIO Office), Jesse Drake (Strategic Communication) and Cassandra Van Buren (Strategic Communication) worked together to develop the content, create a password tester page, and write the article for publication in the U’s weekly newsletter. Great work everyone!

~ Dan Bowden, Information Security Office

Dave Adams was instrumental in building ServiceNow and making it successful in its deployment over the past few years. With Dave’s vision and hard work, ServiceNow grew in effectiveness for Mike Ekstrom’s areas and others. This would not have happened if Dave had not been creative and engaged in bringing solutions forward. While recently his duties have broadened, he has continued to participate, adding his knowledge and skills to the effort and it shows in the recent success of the current phase of the ServiceNow deployment. With Dave’s skills, he taught himself to produce the dashboards and tools the Network Operations Center and others needed. The insight into the system helped to move the Common Infrastructure Services team forward towards data driven processes! With his help, it became possible to truly see where follow-up was required, where accountability was needed, and where focus could be directed and action taken. It made a huge difference and impacted many people all for the better. Thanks Dave!
