TLT moves to OmniUpdate, reveals brand new website

It’s now easier than ever for faculty and students to get what they need, thanks to a brand new website for Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT).

“Our old website was something that had grown organically over the years, and you know how that goes,” said Paul Burrows, TLT information architect. “It was being expanded without a chance to actually sit back and say, ‘How should we better organize the content that’s there?’”

With outdated information and hard-to-find request forms, Burrows knew it was time for an upgrade.

“Our customers couldn’t find the things that they needed,” he said.

The new site addresses those issues by consolidating services, self-help articles and tutorials, and support contact information into easily accessible locations.

Part of the redesign included moving from a Wordpress-hosted site over to OmniUpdate (OU), which the Content and Usability group in UIT University Support Services (USS) maintains.

“There were a number of reasons why we moved to OmniUpdate,” said Burrows. “The most important one was security.”

Other priorities included optimization for mobile devices, accessibility, and customer support, all of which OU and the Content and Usability group provide.

“The most exciting thing I did during the testing phase was open [the website] up on my iPhone,” said Burrows. “It looked fantastic, and it worked really well.”

TLT’s request forms also got a brand new look and feel, in an effort to make it easier for faculty and students to order the services they need.

Overall, the new website is intended to provide customers a seamless experience, whether for faculty who need to order classroom equipment, or instructors and students who need help with Canvas.

“We went into this redesign of our website with the idea of making it simple and linkable for our customers to go in, find what they need, and get out,” said Burrows. "For our customers, it has to be completely seamless."
