UIT veterans on how military service informed their civilian careers

Casey Wilson

On November 11, 2016, a series of Veterans Day events on campus honored U.S. military veterans — including more than 1,100 veterans enrolled or working as faculty and staff.

In UIT, some veterans reflected on how military service helped shaped their service to the University.

Casey Wilson said he’s leveraged leadership and teamwork skills gained in the U.S. Air Force from 1999 to 2006 to his current position as data security analyst in UIT’s Information Security Office (ISO). In addition, Wilson said the experience taught him how to perform specialized advanced technology skills “under high pressure and in extreme environments.”

Cody Hudson, who works in Identity & Access Management (IAM) operations, served in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1975, the year that Deputy CIO Ken Pink began a six-year deployment in the U.S. Air Force, from 1975 to 1981.

Two lessons that Pink applies to his UIT management role are “understanding the chain of command” and “how to lead teams.”

Rhett “Jonzy” Jones, ISO data security analyst, credits the U.S. Marine Corps for greatly improving his “attention to detail.” Jones served from 1976 to 1981.

Fellow U.S. Marine Corps veteran Brett Puzey, installation services manager in UIT’s Teaching & Learning Technologies, said his time in the service from 1998 to 2010 instilled “a determination to make sure everything I do is done to the best of my abilities.”

“It reinforced the importance attention to detail plays in the work we provide,” Puzey said. “This trait has helped to ensure the services and systems we provide to our end users have been thought through and vetted to meet the end users’ needs.”

UIT’s Leadership Team extends its gratitude to all U.S. military veterans for their service.
