$2.86M awarded for tech to support students in 2018-19

Every year, the University of Utah’s Teaching and Learning Portfolio (TLP) IT governance committee undertakes the process for awarding Learning Spaces - Student Computing Fees (LS-SCF) funds, which are derived from special student computing fees assessed to each tuition-paying student at the university. For the 2017-18 award cycle, the Portfolio received funding requests from 27 organizations comprising University of Utah colleges, libraries and centers. Of the $3.24 million in requests, $2.86 million was awarded to support 154 projects, with 90% of funded projects receiving full support.

The TLP is co-chaired by Dean of Undergraduate Studies Martha Bradley-Evans and School of Medicine Interim Dean Wayne Samuelson. Committee membership is composed of a broad group of faculty, administrators, and students from a variety of departments and colleges, including Health Sciences. One of the TLP’s major responsibilities has been to ensure that student computing fees are used for the broadest impact across the student community and campus while supporting centralized resources for audio-visual (AV) and information technologies.

While a student computing fee allocation process has been in place for 33 years, the application process, award criteria, and decision-making groups and processes have evolved over time.

Members of the Teaching and Learning Portolio have noted that each year, they see an improvement in the quality of the LS-SCF proposals received from colleges, libraries and centers. The requests this year were especially well-focused and well-researched by the applicants.

Proposals for the 2018-19 academic year were submitted by colleges, libraries, and centers in January 2018. An ad hoc task force with expertise in the use of IT and AV technologies for teaching and learning was then convened to interview applicants. When interviews were complete, the Portfolio began its deliberations, using an established set of funding priorities. After the U’s annual budgeting processes vetted the award recommendations in March, funds were slated for transfer to awardees when the new academic year commences.
