Busy month for UIT Employee Brown Bag Lunch Sessions
In November 2018, UIT began hosting a semi-regular series of Brown Bag Lunch Sessions for its employees. Sessions are held in the Zion conference room on the fifth floor of 102 Tower, the downtown office building for a number of university organizations including UIT, as well as livestreamed via Skype.
Topics have included OnBase, the new Campus Information Services (CIS) student homepage, Quality Assurance (QA) testing and release management, Business Intelligence (BI), redesigning Geographic Information System (GIS) infrastructure at the U, and Agile development.
October 2019 was a particularly busy month for Brown Bag events.
-
October 8, 2019: ITIL 4 - The Evolution of IT Service Management, hosted by Craig Bennion, UIT Communications Infrastructure. Earlier this year, Axelos (the joint venture company formed by the British government and Capita, LLC) released a much-anticipated update to ITIL. The update puts the emphasis back on best practice and provides an overarching framework for adopting and applying the practices in service organizations, large and small.
- October 17, 2019: Privileged Account Management (PAM), hosted by Chris Stucker and Laurent Lecointre, Information Security Office. As part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), Chris and Laurent discussed privileged account management, including PAM best practices, available tools, and what the future of PAM looks like at the U.
- October 23, 2019: Java Licensing and Usage Changes at the U, hosted by Brad Millett, ITS. Oracle has changed its free Java support, maintenance, and licensing model, which impacts all past, current, and future releases of the technology. Java is a heavily-leveraged technology and this change presents new funding, licensing, and security risks to the University of Utah. Brad discussed how these changes may impact IT staff and their systems, and how to migrate to no-cost alternate solutions.
If you're a UIT employee and have suggestions for future Brown Bag Lunch Sessions, please email uit@utah.edu. We'd love to hear from you!
