What’s ‘behind’ the Campus Map?
The U’s most-used GIS app has dozens of layers worth toggling on

If you haven’t done more than cursory building search, you might be missing out on what makes the Campus Map such a powerful wayfinding tool — the many layers added in the decade since it launched.

If you work, study, or teach at the University of Utah — or attend the occasional event at the U — chances are you’re familiar with the Campus Map. Solving a longtime need, the geographical information system (GIS)-based online map was created in 2014 as the result of a partnership between University Marketing and Communications and Facilities Management’s GIS team. It remains the university’s most-utilized GIS application.
The Campus Map is a handy tool to help navigate our circuitous 1,534-acre campus, health care system, and research park nestled in the Wasatch Mountains. Year after year, the Campus Map has integrated layers that add new dimensions of relevant, real-time data.
The three-line “hamburger” menu at the top-left of the Campus Map displays building-to-building pedestrian routes as well as dropdown menus that display:
- UTA bus stops
- Bike routes, racks, and repair stations
- Live campus shuttle routes
- Vehicle parking, including spaces for visitors, faculty/staff, students, housing residents, electric vehicles, motorcycles, and people with disabilities
- Food and coffee vendors
- Accessibility and safety information on wireless access points, emergency assembly areas, emergency phones, entrances for people with disabilities, all-gender restrooms, and lactation spaces
- Active constructions sites
- Self-guided tours (campus tour, historical building tour, and tree tour)
- Printable maps
Thanks to the Campus Map, getting from point A to point B has never been easier.
