As spring blossomed into warmer days with sunlit blue skies, Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO) organization events focused on experiences outside of 102 Tower, including volunteer opportunities, a downtown scavenger hunt, and photo contest highlighting some international travel.
The DCIO Smells Like Team Spirit Committee held its first volunteer days, organizing service events at Utah Food Bank and Utah Naloxone.
Six people helped at Utah Food Bank on April 21, 2025, sorting and preparing loaves of bread for distribution. The food bank distributes more than 50 million meals each year through a statewide network to vulnerable and food insecure Utahns.
On May 7, 2025, two dozen or so people volunteered at Utah Naloxone, where they assembled kits containing the antidote for opioid overdoses. Volunteers worked in two shifts to make 1,000 kits, plus dental hygiene kits and bags of food for cats and dogs. Volunteers also learned how to administer naloxone and received up to two rescue kits if they wanted them.
The second annual scavenger hunt on May 21, 2025, brought teams together for an eagle-eyed race across downtown. Teams had 45 minutes to find and photograph as many of the answers to the six clues and 20 tasks as possible before returning to 102 Tower for lunch. Each clue included finding an answer to a question specific to that location, like counting the number of lions in front of the Lion House.
Truck Brothers 2 (Ryan Bahmanyar, Mike Hess, Niel Mejia, and Scott Wilgar) took first place for the second year, finding all the answers to the clues and photographing all tasks. Team Parker (Robert Crawford, Parker Suzuki, Timothy Taylor, and Kylen Xiao) placed second, and Team JANC (Christopher Eberhart, John Fresco, Nelson LeDuc, and Aimee Morgan) placed third. U of U-themed prizes included transparent tote bags with hats and mugs; waterproof blankets; and camping chairs.
The second annual photo contest took place over several weeks in May and June, with winners announced on June 11. Nineteen employees submitted images, which included landscapes, from the mountains of Utah and New Zealand to the deserts of the Beehive State and Morocco; global architecture, including a castle, cathedral, and temple; and animals, like a dog, duck, and rooster.
Kathryn Reese won first place with her photo of Milford Sound, New Zealand, “Sailing Free.” She will receive a 16x20 glass print of the image as a prize. Nelson LeDuc took second with “Memories of Morocco,” and Josh Leigh placed third with “Utrecht In Rain.”
