Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO) organization morale and team-building events took a competitive turn in the new year, with dash of creativity and chaos mixed in.

On January 13, 2025, DCIO employees gathered in the first-floor lobby of 102 Tower for a cornhole tournament. The purpose, organizers said, was to meet people you might not know or know well. Cornhole worked well because your partner stood 20 or so feet across from you, so you spent time with a player from the opposing team.

There was chaos as organizers figured out the brackets, confusion as players sorted out the rules, and cacophony as the bean bags hit the plastic and wooden boards and floors. But those were mere distractions compared to the excitement generated by the game, which often elicited applause, high fives, and fist bumps.

After several rounds, John Fresco and Tyler Pingree earned their 3D-printed medals as cornhole tournament champions.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the event on February 12, 2025, included a build-your-own pasta bar, possibly the most difficult round of trivia yet, and a craft table where employees could make valentines with paper, markers, stickers, foam hearts, and more.

Might March be the best month? With too many things to celebrate, the DCIO Smells Like Team Spirit Committee combined several holidays/events into one hour of food and fun. “St. Pi Day Madness” featured pies and a March Madness-style basketball tournament on St. Patrick’s Day. Sixteen people competed in 30-second head-to-head matches, until two people remained. Ultimately, Ed Fresco claimed victory over Jason Moeller, 18-10.

The real question, though, is which pie won. Chocolate, coconut cream, lemon meringue, cherry, apple, key lime, or banana cream?
