Recognizing vigilance after the ISO’s latest phishing simulation
The results from the most recent simulated phishing campaign are in, and the University of Utah community continues to step up to the plate to keep our digital campus secure!
While these simulated campaigns from the Information Security Office (ISO) are designed to test and sharpen our collective defenses, they’r also an opportunity to celebrate the quick thinking of our staff.

Whitney Brgoch, a nursing professional development specialist at Huntsman Cancer Institute, was among the first to successfully identify and report a simulated phishing threat using the Phish Alert button.
Congrats to Whitney!
A special shout-out goes to Whitney Brgoch, a nursing professional development specialist at Huntsman Cancer Institute, who demonstrated exceptional vigilance during the latest test.
Because Brgoch was among the first to successfully identify and report the simulated threat using the Phish Alert button (PAB), the Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) team recognized her sharp eyes with a gift card.
Why quick reporting matters
When a member of the U community reports a suspicious email, it does much more than protect an individual inbox. In a real-world scenario, the first report triggers an immediate response from our information security analysts. Early detection allows the ISO to block malicious senders, isolate compromised links, and protect thousands of other users across the university and University of Utah Health networks within minutes.
How to be the next champion
Safeguarding the university is a team effort. You can protect your colleagues and U data by keeping these quick tips in mind when reviewing your inbox:
- Check the sender: Look closely at the sender’s actual email address, not just the display name.
- Inspect the links: Hover over links to verify where they actually lead.
- Report, don’t ignore: If an email feels off or creates an artificial sense of urgency, don’t delete it. Select the PAB in your Outlook toolbar to send it straight to our security analysts.
Thank you to Brgoch and everyone who actively participates in keeping the University of Utah secure. Stay vigilant!
