UIT Leadership Spotlight: Tony Sams, manager, Learning Experience, Digital Learning Technologies
Where are you from originally?
I am from Mansfield, Ohio — the birthplace and home of this wandering Buckeye for 23 years! Little did I know that my cross-country adventure to Utah in ’93 would lead to a love affair with the Beehive State that’s lasted longer than most Hollywood marriages!
What post-secondary degrees or certifications do you have, in what subjects, and from which schools?
I have a master’s in information science from the University of North Texas, along with a Digital Storytelling Certificate, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio arts/photography from the University of Utah. I’m a creative with a passion for technology and storytelling —basically, I’m the missing piece in the neo-generalist puzzle.
What led you to the University of Utah?
As I stepped out of the art classroom at Highland High School and into the MacAdmins Group at Marriott Library under the guidance of Richard Glaser, I found myself in a thriving learning community that promised a whole new realm of exploration and innovation. With the University of Utah as my new playground, I was ready to dive headfirst into a sea of ideas, technology, and limitless possibilities.
Can you describe the path you took to IT leadership?
Navigating the twists and turns of my career path, I arrived at the position of Learning Experience manager after a series of exhilarating roles that allowed me to flex my creative muscles and push the boundaries of educational technology. From the MacAdmins Group to Client Platform Services, Media Services, and the ProtoSpace team, I’ve been fortunate to contribute to groundbreaking projects like the Simple Video Studio, Virtual Reality Classrooms, and countless community-engaged scholarship programs. With each new adventure, I’ve had the opportunity to learn, grow, and inspire others to join me on the ever-evolving journey of innovative learning experiences.
How would you describe your leadership style and/or philosophy?
My leadership philosophy is rooted in empowering others, cultivating creativity, and continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in education and technology. As a fearless explorer, I thrive in dynamic, collaborative environments where innovation is embraced and encouraged. I believe in harnessing the power of creativity and innovation to create meaningful learning experiences for students and faculty. Ultimately, I strive to be a leader who inspires others to think big and dream bigger, fostering an environment where everyone can reach their full potential.
What do you enjoy most about your role at the U?
Aspects of my role at the University of Utah that bring me fulfillment and satisfaction include the opportunity to innovate, collaborate with other creative minds, and the chance to make a real impact on the learning experiences of students and faculty. I’m also deeply satisfied by the constant growth and learning that comes with working on cutting-edge projects like the Simple Video Studio, Virtual Reality Classrooms, and other community-engaged scholarship programs.
What are some of your hobbies?
With a zest for life and adventure, I indulge in myriad passions that include sailing on open waters, carving fresh powder on the slopes as a ski instructor at Deer Valley, trying hard not to crash on my mountain bike, not hitting anyone on the golf course, and traveling the world with camera in hand. I also proudly serve as a board member of Park City Sailing, where I apply my creative and visual skills to help our community sailing program flourish.
