The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) and Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) will offer sensory-friendly experiences for visitors on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

Sensory friendly experiences are designed to be more comfortable and accessible for individuals sensitive to sensory input like sounds, lights, textures, or crowds. This is especially important for people with sensory processing differences, including those with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or anxiety.

The museums will dim lights and turn off installations with sound or flashing lights. All programming will be suitable for those with sensory needs. Sensory bags with fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, olfactory (scented) sensory toys, and sunglasses will be available at the front desks.

The UMFA event begins at 10:00 a.m. and the NHMU event will start at 5:00 p.m. Both events conclude at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free; registration is not required.

People on the autism spectrum visiting UMFA are encouraged to download a “social story” that details what to expect during their visit.

Those who need an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for the NHMU event may email epaixao@nhmu.utah.edu to request one at least 72 hours in advance.
