Tracy McGee, manager, ServiceNow Development Team

Where are you from originally?

Born and raised in Utah, specifically Rose Park in Salt Lake City.

What post-secondary degrees or certifications do you have, in what areas, and from which schools?

I graduated from Utah State University in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in business information systems and recently received my MBA in IT management from Western Governors University.

What led you to the University of Utah?

I’ve always been a fan of the U and working here was something I worked toward. I enjoyed 18 years of working here, took a short break, and recently returned because the U is amazing.

Can you describe the path you took to IT leadership?

I started as a developer at the university in 2003 and worked with many great leaders throughout the years and learned a lot from each of them. I had the opportunity to step into a scrum master position, working closely with my manager to organize and define team processes. When he left the university, I moved into his role. Shortly after that, I stepped away from the university and worked in different roles that further equipped me to get back into management. The opportunity to step in and manage a great team at the university opened up, and I was lucky to get the position.

How would you describe your leadership style and/or philosophy?

I like to get down in the weeds with my team. I like to work closely with them to help them grow in their everyday work. I feel a team is important in helping to drive one another to success, and if they see me working alongside them, I feel that helps the morale of the team. When it comes time to manage, I manage; when help is needed, I step in and work with them.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the U?

The people I work with. I have really enjoyed getting to know the team I work with and developing a path forward for the success of the team.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Picking up some of the harder aspects of the work and working with the team and other interested parties in defining and developing the process(es) that will ultimately get the most out of the tools we work with.

What are some of your hobbies?

I do a lot of woodworking. I enjoy working in a theater environment —building sets, stage managing, and watching the creative process of a group of people preparing to stage a quality show. I enjoy watching baseball and spending time in the ballpark with friends.

Is there a fun fact about yourself that you’d like to share?

I currently work as a stage manager for shows at Desert Star theater. If you are looking for a fun night out, look it up.
