David Hawkins, manager for AI Technology Services

Where are you from originally?

I was raised in Payson, Utah. Growing up there shaped my appreciation for the outdoors, building community, and learning. Those values continue to influence my work and life today.

What post-secondary degrees or certifications do you have, in what areas, and from which schools?

I earned a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in computer science from Brigham Young University (BYU). I later completed a Master of Science in information systems (MSIS) from the University of Utah. In addition, I have completed, and continue to pursue, multiple certifications focused on existing and new artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies.

What led you to the University of Utah?

I was drawn to the U because of its strong reputation in health care, research, and education. I’m truly thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute and support the mission of improving lives and strengthening the community.

How would you describe your leadership style and/or philosophy?

I believe in a people-first approach: listening, supporting, and empowering team members so they can do their best work. Collaboration, transparency, and continuous learning are the core of my leadership philosophy. My goal is to create an environment where people feel trusted, respected, and motivated to innovate.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the U?

What I enjoy most is working with talented, dedicated colleagues who care deeply about making a difference. It’s inspiring to be part of a university and health system that impacts individuals and the broader community in meaningful ways. I also love working with new and evolving technologies, such as automation and AI, and exploring how they can improve processes and outcomes.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

The rapid change in technology is exciting and demanding. Balancing the need for innovation with the responsibility of maintaining stability and IT security is a constant challenge. At the same time, it strengthens our team and pushes us to grow in meaningful ways.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether it’s hiking, camping, or simply exploring Utah’s canyons and mountains with my family. I love traveling and discovering new places. I enjoy reading and learning new things. I also like to play pickleball and tennis.

Is there a fun fact about yourself that you’d like to share?

At age 15, I stopped attending high school and started at BYU as a full-time student. It was a unique experience that gave me a head start and deepened my appreciation for learning, and it shaped how much I value education and growth.

Is there anything else that you think our readers would like to know about you?

I’m passionate about lifelong learning and mentoring future IT professionals. I believe that by investing in people, we not only strengthen our teams but also build a foundation for innovation and success. Watching others grow in their careers and discover their potential is one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership for me.
