Campus vignette: Student Life Center can help you beat the winter blahs

When clouds creep in and temps drop into the teens, it’s hard to blame a bear for hibernating.

Eccles Student Life Center
Health care experts have lots of great advice for staving off seasonal affective disorder (SAD) — from getting more sunlight (artificial or real) to eating more nutritiously. What if you could also sign up for a backcountry cooking class, prep for an overnight canyoneering trip, swim laps in a 50-meter pool, or test your rock scrambling skills on an indoor climbing wall?
Thanks to Campus Recreation Services, you can! Eccles Student Life Center (ESLC) offers year-round recreational opportunities for U community members, and it’s accessible for free to U students and for a daily, monthly, or yearly fee to faculty, staff, emeriti, and significant others.
ESLC services include:
- Crimson Lagoon: A 50-meter lap pool, indoor and outdoor leisure pools, and a 35-person spa (group and private swim lessons are available)
- The Summit: A 54-foot climbing wall with 11 anchors and 13-foot bouldering wall
- Legacy Gym facilities:
- High Courts: Basketball courts that host gym events for basketball, badminton, and volleyball
- The Core: ESLC’s main fitness space, located on the second floor, that includes 15,000 feet of fitness equipment, free weights, cables, Olympic platforms, and power racks
- The Cove: High- and low-impact cardio equipment, dumbbells, and benches in a tranquil environment
- The Shoreline: 320 yards of indoor track wrapped along the third floor, plus a variety of core equipment, cardio machines, and stretch mats
- Outdoor spaces (weather permitting) include the McCarthey Family Track and Field, University Federal Credit Union Playfield, Crimson Field, and Lassonde Sports Courts
- Outdoor day trips, clinics, and week/weekend adventures: Rock climbing, canyoneering, mountain biking, backpacking, kayaking, etc.
- Outdoor equipment rentals: Watercraft; sports and games; and snow, camping, biking, and climbing gear (maximum rental period is 14 days)
- Gear Central: Rent or buy athletic equipment, make court reservations, and rent single-use lockers
- Group fitness classes
- Intramural sports leagues and tournaments
With a little help from the U, a long winter doesn’t mean you can’t lead an adventurous life.
