After 41 years of unwavering dedication to the University of Utah and University of Utah Health, UIT leader Syndi Haywood retired on April 16, closing a remarkable period of technological advancement for the organization.

As of April 1, the project team had worked with more than 20 U organizations to implement network access control in 12 areas. The team has also added a U of U Health project manager and outside contractor, and begun collaborating with the U’s Network Architecture Community of Practice.

Though UIT’s role will be more limited than in the past, its efforts are integral to the success of a long-term, $155 million student housing initiative underway south of Kahlert Village. The new residential complex is expected to open in fall 2026.

A deluge of commuters and students living on campus were mostly detour-free when returning to the University of Utah for fall semester. Similarly, the uptick in people using IT infrastructure didn’t hit any traffic snarls as the first week of classes got underway on August 18.

On June 18, 2025, about 40 UIT employees received a guided tour of the impressive operations inside the unassuming building that houses the University of Utah’s Downtown Data Center.

The Utah Education and Telehealth Network recently increased the bandwidth on its fiber optic and internet protocol network backbones from 100GB to 400GB circuits.

After more than three decades of distinguished service to the University of Utah, UIT Network Engineer Rick Titus closed the final chapter of what he called a “meaningful and fulfilling” career at a retirement reception in his honor on April 23.

Before each new semester, UIT teams and their IT counterparts across campus and University of Utah Health practice a proactive form of “fire prevention” that involves planning IT changes, maintaining software licenses, and leveraging cloud-based resources.

UIT has purchased and is testing Viavi Solutions’ Observer platform, a suite of networking performance monitoring and diagnostics (NPMD) software products that visualizes and analyzes network and server traffic.

UIT is leading a phased project to deploy a cybersecurity solution called network access control (NAC) at the University of Utah and University of Utah Health. NAC implementation at the U has been in development since 2019.
