The U's sprawling telecommunications network, which consists of a hybrid system of copper and fiber-optic cable, is critical to keeping the university up and running. While fiber has advantages in terms of speed and bandwidth, copper is less expensive, easier to terminate, and one of the best electrical conductors — more than any other non-precious metal.

CARES will add significant gains to U's Wi-Fi capacity

Funds from the CARES Act are breathing new life into previously paused Network Services initiatives, including a plan to improve wireless coverage at the University of Utah — inside and out. The $5.9 million project will increase the number of wireless access points at the university by approximately 27 percent — from 8,910 to 12,263.

MobileU app connects students to campus life and resources

MobileU debuted in March 2020, becoming the U’s first centralized smartphone app. Developed by UIT’s University Support Services teams, MobileU has three objectives: personalize content, notifications, and communications; unify and streamline the user experience; and create a stronger connection to the campus community.

U of U rolling out 2FA for UMail, O365 for campus employees

The Duo Security app requires that users verify their identity to log in.

Starting September 15, 2020, the University of Utah will roll out the second phase of its security upgrades, which will require all campus faculty, staff, and affiliates to use two-factor authentication (2FA) for UMail and all Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams.
