Where are you from originally?

I was born in Salt Lake City but grew up in Weiser, Idaho.

What led you to the University of Utah?

The culture and diversity.

Can you describe the path you took to IT leadership?

During my 30-plus years in the industry, I have held many positions — from an installation technician to a manager. I also have taken several management classes. I saw the University of Utah as an opportunity to continue to grow my career.

How would you describe your leadership style and/or philosophy?

I like to give my team clean and clear directions but also the leeway to do the job their own way, as long as the outcome is the same. I can’t expect them to have the same knowledge and standards that I do.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the U?

The people. Interacting with every department on upper and lower campus. And the departments in Research Park. The diversity of the campus as a whole.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

The pressure that I put on myself to be as successful as possible.

What are some of your hobbies?

Family first. I enjoy the outdoors, mountain biking, and skiing. I also enjoy cooking.

Is there a fun fact about yourself that you’d like to share?

When I was a lot younger, I used to race in downhill skiing.

Is there anything else that you think our readers would like to know about you?

I am always willing to learn and/or share my knowledge.
