Updates to U of U photo, video, and audio recording policy

The following message was emailed to UIT employees on November 16, 2022.

_____

We're writing to inform you of a University of Utah update to the U-wide photo, video, and audio recording policy, which applies to UIT publications and websites (e.g., it.utah.edu and the UIT Node 4 newsletter).

The University of Utah requires people to sign a release form for photos, videos, or audio recordings used in university publications and websites. People must sign the form each time a U representative takes new photos or recordings of them (or when people provide images or recordings of themselves) for university use.

The Office of the Registrar requires that student employees sign a release form to allow public use of their names, alone or in conjunction with images or recordings. If a student employee is younger than 18, a parent or legal guardian also must sign a release form.

You do not need to complete the form at this time. A member of the Strategic Communication team will contact you if and/or when you need to sign the release form.

Please note that images and recordings taken in public or at group events do not require signed consent. If you do not want UIT to use group or public photos that include you, please notify UIT Strategic Communication at stratcomm@it.utah.edu.

UIT will not reuse images or recordings of you or share them with other university organizations (e.g., @theU and Pulse) without your permission. The release form may be modified, upon request, to meet your terms.

For more information, please visit the University Marketing & Communications photo/video FAQ or access the UIT release form.

For more information about the university's privacy policy, please visit the U's Privacy Statement webpage. For more information about student privacy rights, please visit the Registrar's student FERPA page.

If you have questions about the policy or release form, please contact UIT Strategic Communication at stratcomm@it.utah.edu
